I was looking for an ultralite tent that could fit 2 people and would take up almost no space in my pack. As you can see, this is a fairly tall order, but the Tarptent Cloudburst 2 seemed ideal. Lots of floor space, and under 2 pounds. The only downside seemed to be the fact it was one-wall but I did not see this as too big an issue. When I took it out on a 5 day trip with my family I shared the tent with my dog, and this worked out well. But in August, when I took it on a 11 day rigorous trip and had 2 people inside it, it showed its weakness. With two people inside and cooler August nights, a lot of condensation forms, and since it is a 1 wall tent, this meant that you would pack it up wet and unpack it with a wet floor and ceiling. Though the tent dried quickly, but we had more than one cool rainy night, this proved to me this tents biggest weakness. When rain hit the fly, condensation would get knocked off of the inside wall and hit you and your sleeping bag. To me this makes for restless sleep and smelly, damp gear. Then, on the windiest day of the trip, the guy line on the tail of tent ripped from its seam. This for me was the ultimate disappointment. The manufacturer, to his credit, took the tent back and gave me a new one free of charge. I will be giving this tent a second chance when I go on a 2 person backpacking trip this summer, so we’ll have to wait and see how it performs then.

UPDATE: Henry Shire’s has stopped production of the Cloudburst 2 tent, though there are still many others available on his website.
